New Governance Policies Before Council

Artificial intelligence, privacy complaints and misconduct reporting are among the issues set to come before Wyndham councillors when they meet on 23 June.

Councillors will be asked to adopt two updated governance policies covering how the council manages personal information and responds to allegations of wrongdoing.

One of the proposals is a revised Privacy Policy, replacing a document that has not undergone a major review since 2017. According to the officer report, the update reflects changes in legislation, recommendations from an internal audit and the way council now collects and stores information through digital platforms.
Among the changes are new provisions covering artificial intelligence and digital assistance technologies, cloud-based systems, data security standards, the transfer of personal information outside Victoria and updated processes for privacy complaints.

The report notes the policy also includes guidance around disclosures required by law, including child wellbeing disclosures, and clarifies privacy roles and responsibilities across the organisation.

Councillors will also consider a new Integrity Policy, which would merge Wyndham’s existing Public Interest Disclosure Policy and Fraud and Corruption Control Policy into a single framework.

According to council officers, the new policy is designed to establish clear expectations around ethical conduct, accountability and transparency, while setting out reporting pathways and investigation processes for suspected misconduct.
The proposed framework would also align council processes with oversight bodies including IBAC, the Victorian Ombudsman, the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office and the Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner.

Both items have been recommended for adoption by officers and are expected to be considered during Tuesday night’s council meeting.
